Why the Alexander Technique Is Invaluable For Actors: 2 Reasons You Need to Know

There are two central reasons why the Alexander Technique is invaluable for Actors:

  1. You will learn to identify unconscious habits, and
  2. Be present in the moment.

Both skills are critical for performance. While I teach you how to improve your posture and move with more ease, you will become aware of habits that you probably don’t even know that you’re doing and that could be interfering with your acting. For example, if you are pulling your shoulders in and down and don’t know it, you will likely bring this habit into an audition. Imagine how problematic this might be if you are auditioning for the role of a strong, confident person.

But the work is not only physical. You will also learn to deal with nerves so you can be present in the moment. Alexander Technique is a mind/body practice. When you learn how to undo tension habits, you will change emotionally as well as physically. You will not only move better better but also be more grounded and calm. You will be able to stop judging and overthinking so you can be present in the moment. And being present is everything. Emotions can flow. Performances become more authentic and compelling. My acting students truly resonate with the Alexander Technique and I love seeing the transformation.

When I was on trial as an attorney, I encountered some of the same issues with nerves that actors experience in performance. But once I found the Technique, I had the tools I needed to deal with them. Knowing how helpful this was for me under pressure in court and in life in general, I feel especially invested in sharing Alexander Technique with actors.

I teach an ongoing series for actors in my studio and private lessons for actors as well. Contact me for a free 20-minute phone consultation if you’d like to talk about working with me. I’d love to hear from you!
